They say artists suffer for their work and Nicole Kidman certainly looked in distress on set on her new bush thriller flick Strangerland this week.
The Oscar winning actress was left barefoot and filthy as she was shepherded down the street in her underwear by her co-star Joseph Fiennes.
In the harrowing behind-the-scenes footage of the upcoming gritty Australian film the 46-year-old has undergone her most dramatic transformation yet.
Barely recognisable the Australian babe sports a brunette wig and is almost catatonic, as she plays Catherine Parker one half of a married couple whose two children go missing in the outback.
Wearing a mud-coloured, man’s shirt her porcelain skin is smeared with dirt, while her thin legs are caked in mud and her knees torn and bloody.
Her normally auburn hair is bedraggled and lank as she walks zombie-faced and shoeless down the street.
The actress clearly portrays the emotional distress of her character, her face wrought with pain as she closes her eyes to shield herself from the world.
Propped up by her on-screen husband played by Fiennes he grabs her by the scruff of her skirt as he carries her through the streets
Earlier on the red-headed wore a fluffy white dressing gown as she prepared for the distressing scene on the film set.
The American-born Aussie first arrived back in Sydney from the US last month, before making her way to the tiny 2,000-people town of Canowindra, in the central west of New South Wales, to shoot some of the flick.
The movie is also being filmed in the isolated mining city of Broken Hill and Sydney suburb Hammondville, where the down to earth star posed for snaps outside of her dressing room trailer with fans last week.
Schoolgirl Harmony Barry, 17, was there with her friends and family, and told MailOnline Nicole was delightful and more than happy meet and greet her excited fans.
‘The whole time she had a nice smile on her face and was really lovely to everyone which was so nice.’
‘She was in the makeup van – so I was just standing out the front waiting for her to come out.’
‘When she came out she said “hi” to everyone…she did say I’m on a tight schedule but even after that she hung around and took photos with everyone that was there.’
Nicole will star alongside Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love), who will play her husband in the movie, and Hugo Weaving (The Matrix), who will play the policeman leading the investigation in the movie.
Meanwhile, in a pre-recorded episode of The Queen Latifah Show on Monday night, Nicole stunned viewers in a classy fitted red dress as she discussed how her marriage to Keith Urban is ‘healing’.
The immaculately dressed star confessed: ‘You kind of move into each other and discover and heal a lot of things in each other too. It’s very healing when gently done’.
She also spoke about her great life living in country music capital Nashville with the New Zealand-Australian singer.
Nicole this week had to skip Keith’s glitzy awards performance at the 49th Annual Academy Of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas because of her filming commitments for the indie film Strangerland.
