THE BIG PICTURE is back! Join us as we take over the Astor Theatre for one big day of free professional development for aspiring filmmakers.
As part of the St Kilda Film Festival’s Filmmaker Development program, The Big Picture presents a diverse range of forums with industry experts and guest filmmakers covering all you need to know about making films. This includes a special edition of Triple R’s Film Buff’s Forecast, broadcast live in the cinema and hosted by Festival Director Paul Harris.
The Big Picture will provide you with opportunities to gain a wealth of knowledge, and meet with experienced filmmakers and industry professionals.
11am Demystifying the Legal Process
Intellectual property and copyright laws are always evolving, so how can a filmmaker keep in the know? This session will explore legal issues relating to financing, production and distribution of film and television. Join Shaun Miller and Jenny Lalor as they provide information that all filmmakers need to know to navigate the landscape of independent film.
12pm Triple R Film Buff’s Forecast Live Broadcast
Be part of this unique live experience where Paul Harris will kick off the afternoon by speaking to our Festival guest from Palm Springs ShortFest – Lead Programmer Heidi Zwicker, revealing all you need to know about international short film festivals. Paul Harris will then be joined by Matthew Saville, Steve Baker and Angus Sampson – three St Kilda Film Festival success stories. This stellar line-up of Australian screen content creators share their successes and setbacks, and discuss pathways into the industry, creating content in Australia, and keeping abreast of the ever-changing landscape. This is sure to be a fun and very informative discussion.
2.15pm Meet the Makers: Healing
Most short filmmakers dream of making their first feature. We take an in-depth look at making a feature with the key creators behind the film Healing. This session will explore the inception and development phase of the project, involving blending the right talent, creativity and technology. They will discuss the script development, funding, production, post-production process, distribution and exhibition of the film. Come along and gain the tips on how to navigate the landscape of making a feature film in Australia. Featuring writer, producer, director Craig Monahan (Peaches, The Interview), writer Alison Nisselle (Curtin, Parer’s War ), Tim Phillips (Screen Australia) and Kristian Connolly (Cinema Nova). Moderated by the film’s lawyer, Shaun Miller.
3.45pm Meet the Makers: In Bob We Trust
Join the team from Ghost Pictures for a special discussion as we go in-depth and behind-the-scenes with the making of In Bob We Trust. Filmed for over three years, capturing over 500 hours of unique footage, this forum will provide insight into the demands and commitment of making a feature documentary this includes researching, crowd funding, securing rights, interview techniques and editing. This is a rare opportunity to peek into the creative process and the challenges of making documentary films. Moderated by the film’s lawyer, Shaun Miller the panel includes writer, director, producer, editor Lynn-Maree Milburn (Autoluminescent: Rowland S Howard), writer, producer, editor Richard Lowenstein (Dogs in Space, He Died with a Felafel in his Hands) writer, producer, cinematographer Andrew de Groot (Ben Lee: Catch My Disease, Bastardy), producer Maya Gnyp (Ben Lee: Catch My Disease) and Alan Crabbe (crowd funding platform Pozible).
