Australian crime / road drama Last Ride just jumped way, way up on my list of anticipated films for the coming year. The first pair of teasers for the picture – which stars Hugo Weaving as a small time criminal on the run into the Australian outback with his young son in tow – were already very impressive, but the freshly released full trailer? Well, that gives you a much larger look into both the world this is set in and Weaving’s performance within it and it all looks flat out brilliant.
A desperate father takes his ten year old son, Chook, on the run after committing a violent crime. As the two journey into the desert and an unknown future, their troubled relationship and the need to survive sees them battling the elements and each other. Chook eventually takes control and the choice he is forced to make has a devastating effect on both their lives.
If the finished film comes out anywhere close to the strength of this trailer then I fully expect Weaving to be up for a number of acting awards at the end of the year. Fans of John Hillcoat take notice of this one. The trailer and both teasers are below the break.
