The last we heard from the Wachowski‘s, they delivered Speed Racer, which is a fascinating film that’s easily about twenty minutes too long, but kind of great. It bombed, and rumors swirled about the filmmakers. It’s hard not to describe the trailer for Cloud Atlas – their latest movie directed along with Tom Tykwer – as out and proud. This looks weird and epic and pure.
The film stars a cast who go through multiple roles in the film, with Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, and many more appearing in multiple timelines in the past, present and future, with some possibly fictional.
The directors are on record saying they didn’t know how to sell the film, so they cut a six minute trailer for the movie, which may or may not play theaters (it’s said to be an international trailer), which points out that trailers are likely viewed as much in theaters as they are online. Their introduction is here:
And here’s the trailer.
Watching this, it’s apparent that they are tackling many of the same themes and ideas of their earlier films (even Tykwer, who made a name for himself with the parallel realities of Run Lola Run), but on a level we haven’t seen before from any of them. The film comes out October 26. We can’t wait.
