The Babadook and The Water Diviner for best film at last year’s prize night),Seven’s blockbuster telemovie, Catching Milat and its acclaimed leading man, Mal Kennard — hot favourite to win a Logie for his chilling transformation as serial killer Ivan Milat — were inexplicably ignored for a single nomination for either cast or crew.
The network — which will broadcast the AACTAs on December 9 — will also no doubt question the exclusion of its new drama 800 Words, one of this year’s top rating productions.
Joining an extensive list of popular TV actors to go without recognition:
* Gold Logie winner Rebecca Gibney was ignored for her performances in both her crime series, Winter and more recently in Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door;
* Mandy McElhinney, who starred in the pivotal role of Gina Rinehart in Nine’s telemovie, House Of Hancock, and Sam Neill as Lang Hancock, were both snubbed for their leading roles, while co-star, Peta Sergeant, earned a lead actress nod for her supporting part as Rose Porteous;
* Alex Dimitriades, Aden Young and Mirrah Foukes, who earned rapturous praise for their performances in SBS mini-series, The Principal, all missed out on individual nominations;
* Wentworth stars Danielle Cormack and Nicole Da Silva were also overlooked, in favour of co-star Pamela Rabe, recognised for her performance as The Freak in the Foxtel prison drama;
* International superstars Sam Worthington and Hugh Dancy went unnoticed in their lead roles in Foxtel’s Deadline Gallipoli;
* While one of the top-rating and most talked about free-to-air reality TV programs of the year, Ten’s The Bachelor failed to receive a single nomination.
The notable omissions will sadly throw shade over those who did emerge with TV nominations, including:
* Newcomer Joel Jackson, who earned a double nomination for his debut role as war correspondent Charles Bean in Foxtel’s Deadline Gallipoli and his triple-threat performance in Seven’s Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door;
* Redfern Now’s Deborah Mailman and Wayne Blair for the lead roles in the final season of the brilliant ABC drama series;
* Glitch newcomer, Hannah Monson, who earned her first nomination for her supporting role in the ABC thriller;
* While The Voice, The X Factor, MasterChef, My Kitchen Rules and Real Housewives Of Melbourne will compete for the best reality crown.
To be eligible, production companies (not the TV networks) can enter both talent and programs for consideration if the first episode of each show aired between November 14, 2014 and October, 15 this year; as well as the random payment of an entrance fee of $1300 per program.
An AACTA spokeswoman said: “all television nominations for the 5th AACTA Awards presented by Presto were determined by juries of screen industry professional AACTA members. But, in a highly competitive year for television, some programs and performers missed out.”
In other film categories, The Dressmaker, a gothic revenge comedy that opens in cinemas Thursday, stitched up the competition with an impressive 12 nominations, including nods for best film, best director, best actress (Kate Winslet), best supporting actress (Judy Davis AND Sarah Snook) and best supporting actor (Hugo Weaving.)
Mad Max: Fury Roadwas hot on its fishtail, however, with 11 nominations, including best film, best direction and best actress (Charlize Theron).
Controversially, Tom Hardy failed to get a nod for his performance in the title role.
In a competitive field, he and The Dressmaker’s Liam Hemsworth were squeezed out by Michael Caton (Last Cab to Darwin), Ryan Corr (Holding The Man), Sullivan Stapleton (Cut Snake) and Patrick Brammall (Ruben Guthrie.)
Nominated alongside with Winslet and Theron for best actress were Australian-based performers Robyn Butler (Now Add Honey) and Ningali Lawford-Wolf (Last Cab to Darwin).
In a bumper year at the box office, it’s likely that Robert Connolly’s Paper Planes, another hugely successful family film, took Oddball’s place as one of five best film nominees, alongside The Dressmaker, Fury Road, Last Cab to Darwin and Holding the Man.
