Hugo Weaving, as the murderous thane, is at the centre of an ensemble cast including Melita Jurisic, Robert Menzies, John Gaden and Paula Arundell in Shakespeare’s master class in diabolical ambition and guilt for Sydney Theatre Company’s new rendition of Macbeth.
The production delivers a new experience for spectators and actors alike, with a specially reoriented Sydney Theatre. In a reversal of the natural order, the audience occupies seats on the stage itself, while the abandoned, empty auditorium is the haunting backdrop to all the terrifying action.
Continuing his keen-eyed interpretation of classic texts, STC Co Resident Director Kip Williams (Under Milk Wood, Romeo and Juliet) here employs a simple mode of theatrical storytelling. His malleable actors are the chief devices for sharing the chilling narrative of an isolated individual who will stop at nothing to renegotiate his place in society.
Macbeth will be running from 25 July to 27 September at Sydney Theatre, 22 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay. For more information, visit http://www.sydneytheatre.com.au/
