Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ is leading the nominations race.
The nominees have been unveiled for the 2014 AACTA Awards, and despite debate over whether Baz Luhrmann’sThe Great Gatsby should be classed as a bona fide Aussie flick, the lavish adaptation is leading the nomination board with 14 nods including Best Film and Best Direction.
Also battling it out for the title of Best Film is Kim Mordaunt’s Laos-set crowd-pleaser (which has clocked in twelve nominations including Best Direction), The Rocket; Ivan Sen’s simmering thriller, Mystery Road (pictured); Emile Sherman’s drama, Dead Europe; the touching Satellite Boy; and an Australia feature anthology feature, The Turning, with the directorial ensemble also nominated for Best Direction.
In the acting categories, nominated for Best Actor are Leonardo DiCaprio for his portrayal of the iconic Gatsby; youngster Sitthiphon Disamoe for his role as a spirited youth in The Rocket; Ewen Leslie for his turn as a young man delving into his family’s dark history; and Hugo Weaving for his performance in the David Wenham-directed segment of The Turning. In the female categories, Carey Mulligan has been nominated for her portrayal of Daisy Buchanan; Tasma Walton scored a nod for her turn in Mystery Road; Rose Byrne has been nominated for her unforgettable turn in The Turning; while Naomi Watts is up for her role in Adoration.
Nominated for Best Supporting Actor is Marton Csokas (Dead Europe), Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby), Thep Phongam (The Rocket) and Angus Sampson (100 Bloody Acres) while competing for Best Supporting Actress is Elizabeth Debicki and Isla Fisher (The Great Gatsby), Alice Keohavong (The Rocket), and Mirrah Foulkes (The Turning).
In the writing categories, Colin and Cameron Cairnes’ 100 Bloody Acres have been nominated for Best Original Screenplay; along with Morgan O’Neill and Tim Duffy for Drift; Ivan Sen for Mystery Road and Kim Mordaunt for The Rocket.
