Tomorrow marks the release of Universal’s remake of The Wolfman (see our review), starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving. The latter is, of course, a fan-favorite actor known for his roles as Agent Smith in The Matrix (I still quote “Mr. Anderson” on a regular basis), V in V For Vendetta and Lord Elrond in Lord of the Rings.

Of course, if you know anything about the Lord of the Rings/Tolkien universe then you’ll be aware that Lord Elrond doesn’t just appear in “the trilogy” but also in The Hobbit, which is the book that precedes the events of LOTR. It’s bee a big point of discussion that producer Peter Jackson and director Guillermo del Toro will be including Weaving’s character, Elrond, in the upcoming adaptation of The Hobbit.

Weaving spoke recently to Steve “Frosty” Weintraub over at Collider, where he talked about various things including The Hobbit, of which he knows less than you might think he would. After talking about The Wolfman and his distinctive and iconic voice, Weaving talks a little about the adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s pre-LOTR tale. Awhile back, Weaving – along with Andy Serkis as Gollum/Smeagol and Ian McKellen as Gandalf – was reportedly confirmed to reprise his role. But since then, del Toro and Jackson have said no one but McKellen is definitely returning and instead they are making sure to do a proper casting call for all roles. However, for the sake of continuity and the fact that the actors who played those roles are still around and working, I don’t see why you would want to recast.

I have no doubt Weaving will be back as Lord Elrond and him not having read a script is probably just due to the fact they’ve not been given out readily to anyone involved (the script for part one has been handed in and Ok’d; the script for the second part is still being written). I Weaving’s sentiments that I look forward to getting back to the world of LOTR but at the same time seeing it from the simpler, perhaps more childlike view of The Hobbit.

Part I of The Hobbit is set to hit theaters in December, 2011 (although we heard word it may not come out until 2012), with Part 2 set for a year later in December, 2012. Shooting is supposed to start shooting in June this year in New Zealand.
