Animal Fund Voiceless, established by father-and-daughter team Brian and Ondine Sherman, this week awarded $141,000 in grants to animal protection campaigners.

After receiving more than 110 submissions, a panel of five judges selected the recipient organisations, of which three were granted $20,000 - Animal Liberation ACT, Compassion in World Farming and Humane Society International.

Among the judges was Voiceless ambassador and actor Hugo Weaving, who commented, "It's hard to believe that hundreds and thousands of animals are suffering unnecessarily in a country like ours, but it's encouraging to see that so many people are trying to make a difference".

Better known as a local philanthropist than animal campaigner, Brian Sherman established the fund with his daughter - both of whom are vegetarians - earlier this year.

"Most of our recipients are unlikely to receive any financial support for the excellent work they do and Voiceless is delighted to help them make a difference," he said.
