Glasgow Film Festival is a family affair this year as Jim Loach joins us to introduce his film, Oranges and Sunshine, on Friday 25 February (20.30) following his Dad Ken's visit on Wednesday 23 February. Jim will also take part in a Q&A following the screening.
Jim began his career directing drama for television and has worked on many popular series including Coronation Street, Hotel Babylon and Shameless. Oranges and Sunshine is his debut feature film. Oranges and Sunshine tells the story of Margaret Humphreys, a social worker from Nottingham, who uncovered one of the most significant social scandals in recent times: the organised deportation of children in care from the United Kingdom to Australia. Almost single-handedly, against overwhelming odds and with little regard for her own well-being, Margaret reunited thousands of families, brought authorities to account and worldwide attention to an extraordinary miscarriage of justice. Scots screenwriter Rona Munro has skillfully adapted Margaret Humphreys’s 1994 book Empty Cradles and Loach secures a powerhouse performance from Emily Watson in the lead role.
