Three new characters posters have been released for Marvel’s ‘Captain America’ – including one with Hugo Weaving as the villainous Red Skull.

It’s not that everyone has just forgotten about Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger arriving later this summer. However, between discussion about the artifacts in Odin’s vault, the quality of this week’s X-Men: First Class, and the marketing blitz for Green Lantern, Chris Evan’s first solo outing as the heroic Steve Rogers has been pushed to the back of the superhero movie line for the time being.

For those of you whose favorite Avenger still remains The First Avenger – and everyone else – Marvel has unveiled a trio of character posters for the three big players in Captain America.

Even though Captain America will be the first Marvel production not set in the present (it takes place during WWII), the film will contain numerous plot points, characters, and story elements that help strengthen its connection to the Marvel movie universe. On top of that, Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon also worked as a creative consultanton Joe Johnston’s movie – to help ensure that it will fit better with his superhero ensemble epic.

Captain America still needs to work on its own terms – as an entertaining period action-adventure picture that just happens to feature a hero who dresses in red, white, and blue duds (as opposed to, say, Indiana Jones’ archaeologist gear). Hopefully, Johnston’s film will also not be hindered by its connection to the larger Marvel universe and will integrate the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization with even more fluidity than Thor managed.

While we wait for Captain America to actually be released -  after the inevitable onslaught of TV spots and trailers – there are these new character posters of Evans in costume as the Captain, Hayley Atwell as the daring Peggy Carter, and Hugo Weaving as the villainous Red Skull to fawn over.

There’s nothing all that new or revealing about these posters; nonetheless, each of the characters’ respective designs look like solid real-life versions of their comic book incarnations (though opinions will undoubtedly differ in that regard). Weaving’s Red Skull in particular looks as nasty and unnerving as the filmmakers behind Captain America have been promising from the beginning. Now we just have to wait to see some actual footage of him in action – more than the brief glimpse provided in the first Captain America trailer.

Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters this summer on July 22nd.
