STV The actors, following in the footsteps of Brad Pitt, will be in the city to make Cloud Atlas later this month. Tom Hanks and Halle Berry are set to become the latest Hollywood stars to film in Glasgow. The pair have been lined up for the Wachowski brothers' big-screen adaptation of writer David Mitchell's novel Cloud Atlas and will begin filming some scenes in the city later this month. Cloud Atlas, which will also star Susan Sarandon and Jim Broadbent, tells six interconnected stories each set in its own place and time. Most of the filming is taking place in Germany but producers say they are coming to Glasgow because of the "support and encouragement" offered by the city, as well as its Victorian-era grid street system and architecture. Filming in Glasgow will take place on September 16, 17, 18 and 26. David Brown, Scottish line producer, said: "We are very pleased to be coming to Glasgow later this month. The principal reason for coming to Glasgow is the welcome that the city gives to film-makers. "We are overwhelmed by the support and encouragement we have received from everyone in the city. This can-do attitude is turning Glasgow into a highly attractive proposition for film-makers across the world. "In addition to a positive approach and its position as the gateway to the rest of Scotland, the city's architecture and classic grid system makes it uniquely appealing." The announcement came as filming of Brad Pitt's zombie blockbuster World War Z wrapped up in Glasgow. The city has also hosted Peter Mullan's film Neds, the forthcoming Perfect Sense with Ewan McGregor and Eva Green, and The Decoy Bride starring David Tennant. Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson said: "It is fantastic news that another major production is coming to film in Glasgow, and another sign that we are becoming the UK's film-friendliest city. "The recent experience of the filming of World War Z in the city was extremely positive and we look forward to welcoming Cloud Atlas later this month." Glasgow is the heart of the film and television production industry in Scotland, an industry which has contributed around £150m to the local economy in the past decade. In 2009 Paisley-born actor Gerard Butler was appointed as Glasgow Film Office ambassador to help raise the city's profile and demonstrate its capability as a production base.
