A US comedy about an action star in the mould of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal.

This space was recently devoted to The Magician, an outstanding Australian film that failed to score at the box office but should fare well on DVD. It's a mockumentary, as is Kenny, a new Aussie film about a battler who delivers portable toilets for a living. Kenny deserves to be a huge hit.

This is another mockumentary, a US comedy about an action star in the mould of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. His name is Frank Sledge and he's a dancer with limited talents who improbably hits the A-list, where he self-destructs in an orgy of booze, women and ego.

Even his peers don't regard him highly. "C'mon, the guy's a dancer, OK?" says Carrie-Anne Moss, his co-star in Bloodfight II. "He's not going to win an Academy Award here. Whereas I probably will. I'm a serious actor."

Among scenes that spoof Rambo, Rocky, Flashdance and The Matrix, the interviewees include Angelina Jolie and Hugo Weaving, each of them nicely droll.

Sledge's star and scriptwriter is David Leitch, a stuntman who has done Brad Pitt's dirty work in Fight Club and Troy. Thanks to Leitch, this is silly, lighthearted fun - albeit not as satisfying as The Magician or Kenny. Australia, it seems, leads the world in mockumentary-making.
