A small Australian documentary, which started with a digital camera and $300, is on its way to achieving international acclaim.

Four Wheel Dreaming will screen in Darwin tonight as part of a national launch.

The film is about the rebuilding of an ex-army land rover and its travels through more than 200 different language groups in Indigenous communities over 10 years.

Director Michael Butler says his project gained wide support from the Australian community with high-profile Indigenous leaders and Australian actors coming on board.

"We were able to get Hugo Weaving and Jack Thompson into a bit of a headlock and get them involved with this project," he said.

"They were delighted to be involved.

"Hugo was initially filming The Matrix two and three and we had him come along and place his hand on the vehicle and he is one of the narrators."
