The Transcontinental
July 30, 2008
The stars came out to play in Port Augusta last week with the city playing host to Hugo Weaving and an array of film crew.
The film Last Ride was shot on location at Ian's Chicken Hut for three days with Weaving and 10-year-old South Australian actor Tom Russell taking in the sights of the region. Last Ride is an adaptation of a book depicting a father and son on the run from the law in country New South Wales, although shooting was moved to South Australia because of the impressive scenery, producer Antonia Barnard said. "The Flinders was just a better backdrop for what we wanted," Mrs Barnard said. With a crew of between 30 and 40, and actors flying into the region from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, the Port Augusta region has been showcased to a lot of talent, opening up future prospects for the region to be used in the filming industry. "The backdrop is sort of the third character in the father and son film," Mrs Barnard said. "The Flinders was a beautiful place to set the scene." Filming will continue for another five weeks in South Australia before the film goes into postproduction. A release date for the film not yet known.
