Quorn in South Australia's northern Flinders Ranges is hosting the film crew of The Last Ride, an Australian road movie starring Hugo Weaving.

Producer Nick Cole says they will be filming for about five days in Quorn, before moving further north to Wilpena Pound, Woomera and Leigh Creek.

Mr Cole says the South Australian outback was chosen over New South Wales because of its spectacular landscapes.

"We thought that the South Australian landscape was New South Wales on steroids because it's so spectacular and so visually interesting and just gave us such a wide palette of choices," he said.

"We thought, 'Well, we'll actually adapt the script and set it in South Australia'."

In the film, Weaving plays a violent father on the run from the law with his young son Chook.

Weaving is well-known for his work in the Matrix and the Lord of the Rings films as well as Australian favourite The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

He has been back in Australia for less than a month, after finishing work in London on horror film The Wolf Man in late June.
