Plot

The novel consists of six nested stories that take us from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalypticfuture. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or watched) by the main character in the next. All stories but the last one get interrupted at some moment, and after the sixth story concludes at the center of the book, the novel "goes back" in time, "closing" each story as the book progresses in terms of pages but regresses in terms of the historical period in which the action takes place. Eventually, readers end where they started, with Adam Ewing in the Pacific Ocean, circa 1850.

Plot

Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, The Wolfman brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother...and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself.

Lawrence Talbot's childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother's fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate.

As he pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself...one he never imagined existed.

Plot

Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (NATALIE PORTMAN) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked man (HUGO WEAVING) known only as “V.” Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he urges his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V’s mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself – and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plan to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

Quotes

V: "Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V."
Evey: "Are you like a crazy person?"
V: "I'm quite sure they will say so."

*************

Evey: "Who--who are you?"
V: "Who? Who is but the form following the function of what... and what I am is a man in a mask. Evey: "I can see that."
V: "Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation, I'm merely remarking on the paradox of asking a masked man who he is."

*************

Evey: "You're getting back at them for what they did to you?"
V: "What they did to me was monstrous."
Evey: "And they created a monster."

*************

V: "Remember, remember, the fifth of November, The gunpowder treason and plot. I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot."

*************

V: "This is the most important moment in your life... Commit to it"

*************

V: [Quoting Macbeth from Macbeth Act I Scene 7] "I dare do all that may become a man; Who dares do more is none."

*************

V: "I, like God, do not play with dice and do not believe in coincidence."

*************

Evey: "Does it have a happy ending?"
V: "As only celluloid can deliver."

*************

Finch: "The only reliable records in any government are tax records"

*************

[After a hail of gunfire doesn't stop V]
Creedy: "Die! Why won't you die?"
V: "Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. There is an idea, Mr. Creedy - and ideas are bulletproof."

*************

Creedy: Defiant until the end, huh? You won't cry like him, will you? You're not afraid of death. You're like me.
V: "The only thing that you and I have in common, Mr. Creedy, is that we're both about to die."
Creedy: "How do you imagine that's gonna happen?"
V: "With my hands around your neck."
Creedy: "Bullocks. Whatchya gonna do, huh? We've swept this place. You've got nothing. Nothing but your bloody knives and your fancy karate gimmicks. We have guns."
V: "No, what you've have are bullets, and the hope that when your guns are empty I will no longer be standing, because if I am you will all be dead before you've reloaded."
Creedy: "That's impossible. Kill him."
[The fingermen open fire on V, but he still stands after their clips are empty.]
V: "My turn"

*************

Evey: "My father once told me that artists use lies to tell the truth, while politicians use lies to cover the truth up."

*************

V: "Would you like to dance?"
Evey : "Now?! On the eve of your revolution?"
V: "A revolution without dancing...is a revolution not worth having!"

*************

Evey: "I don't want you to die."
V: "That is the most beautiful thing you could have ever given me."

*************

Sutler: "Gentlemen, I want this terrorist found... and I want him to understand what *terror* really means."

*************

V: "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people."

*************

Sutler: "I want this country to realize that we stand on the edge of oblivion. I want everyone to remember *why* they need us! "

*************

Finch: "If our own government was responsible for the deaths of almost a hundred thousand people... would you really want to know?"

*************

Evey: "I wish I wasn't afraid all the time, but I am..."

*************

V: "Those who are responsible will be held accountable."

Plot

With the final battle joined and the legions of darkness gathering, Gandalf urgently tries to rally Gondor's broken army to action. He is aided by Rohan's King Theoden, who unites his warriors for history's biggest test.

Yet even with their courage and passionate loyalty, the forces of men--with Eowyn and Merry hidden among them--are no match for the enemies swarming against Gondor.
Still, in the face of great losses, they charge forward into the battle of their lifetimes, tied together by their singular goal to keep Sauron distracted and give the Ring Bearer a chance to complete his quest. Their hopes rest with Frodo, a tiny but determined hobbit making a perilous trip across treacherous enemy lands to cast the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom.

The closer Frodo gets to his final destination, the heavier his burden becomes and the more he must rely on Samwise Gamgee. Gollum-and the Ring itself-will test Frodo's allegiances and, ultimately, his humanity.

Quotes

Elrond (voice over): "Take her by the safest road. A ship lies at anchor in the Grey Havens. It waits to take her across the sea. The last journey of Arwen Undómiel."

*************

(flashback to Elrond): "There is nothing for you here. Only death."

*************

Elf: "Lady Arwen, we cannot delay. My Lady!"

Arwen: "Tell me what you have seen."
Elrond: "Arwen."
Arwen: "You have the gift of foresight. What did you see?"
Elrond: "I looked into your future and I saw death."
Arwen: "There is also life. You saw that there was a child. You saw my son."
Elrond: "That future is almost gone."
Arwen: "But it is not lost.

Elrond: "Nothing is certain"
Arwen: "Some things are certain. If I leave him how, I will regret it forever. It is time."
[Arwen approaches the shards of Narsil, wearing a dark cloak.]
Arwen (voice over): "From the ashes a fire shall be woken. A light from the shadow shall spring. Renewed shall be blade that was broken. The crownless again shall be king."
Arwen: "Reforge the sword. Ada."
Elrond: "Your hands are cold. The life of the Eldar is leaving you."
Arwen: "It is my choice. Ada, Whether by your will or not, there is no ship now which can bear me hence."

*************

Elrond: "I come on behalf of one whom I love. Arwen is dying. She will not long survive the Evil that now spreads from Mordor. The light of the evenstar is fading. As Sauron's power grows her strength wanes. Arwen's life is now tied to the fate of the ring. A shadow is upon us Aragorn. The end is come."
Aragorn: "It will not be our end, but his."
Elrond: "You ride to war, but not to victory. Sauron's armies march on Minas Tirith, as you know. But in secret he sends another force, which will attack from the river. A fleet of Corsair ships sails from the south. It will be in the city in two days. You're outnumbered, Aragorn. You need more men."
Aragorn: "There are none."
Elrond: "There are those who dwell in the mountain."
Aragorn: "Murderers, traitors. you would call upon them to fight? They believe in nothing. They'll answer to no one."
Elrond: "They will answer to the king of Gondor! Anduril, flame of the West, forged from the shards of Narsil."
Aragorn: "Sauron will not have forgotten the Sword of Elendil. The blade that was broken shall return to Minas Tirith."
Elrond: "The man who wields the power of this sword can summon to him an army more deadly than any that walks this earth. Put aside the Ranger. Become who you were born to be. Take the Dimholt road. Ónen i-Estel Edain." [I gave Hope to the Dúnedain.]

Plot

It is a dark time for the world. Neo is trapped in the "Train Station", between the Matrix and the Source. Zion is doomed to be crushed under an unstoppable army of countless Sentinels. But it is not only the human race that is in peril. The machines press ever onward against the humans, unaware that one force within the Matrix has slowly been growing, and has taken over that world completely: Smith. There is only one hope for both races, the one force that can stop Smith, and that is Neo. One final battle must ensue. And the outcome of this battle will decide the fate and future of both races.

Quotes

Agent Smith: "Mr. Anderson. Welcome back, we missed you."
[Agent Smith pauses and looks around at the multitude of clones he has created]
Agent Smith: "Like what I've done with the place?"
Neo: "It ends tonight."
Agent Smith: "I know it does, I've seen it. That's why the rest of me is just going to enjoy the show because we already know that I'm the one that beats you."

*************

Sati: "The Oracle told me about you."
Agent Smith: "Really? What did she say about me?"
Sati: "That you were a bad man."
Agent Smith: "Oh, I'm not so bad, once you get to know me"

*************

Agent Smith: "Why, Mr. Anderson? Why do you do it? Why get up? Why keep fighting? Do you believe you're fighting for something? For more that your survival? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know? Is it freedom? Or truth? Perhaps peace? Yes? No? Could it be for love? Illusions, Mr. Anderson. Vagaries of perception. The temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose. And all of them as artificial as the Matrix itself, although only a human mind could invent something as insipid as love. You must be able to see it, Mr. Anderson. You must know it by now. You can't win. It's pointless to keep fighting. Why, Mr. Anderson? Why? Why do you persist?"
Neo: "Because I choose to."

*************

Agent Smith: "Can you feel it Mr. Anderson? Closing in on you? Oh I can, I really should thank you after all. It was, after all, it was your life that taught me the purpose of all life. Purpose of life is to end."

*************

The Oracle: "You are a bastard.
Agent Smith: "You would know, Mom."

*************

Agent Smith: "The great and powerful Oracle. We meet at last. I suppose you've been expecting me, right? The all-knowing Oracle is never surprised. How can she be, she knows everything. But If that's true, then why is she here? If she knew I was coming, why didn't she leave?[sweeps plate of cookies off table]"
Agent Smith: "Maybe you knew I was going to do that, maybe you didn't. If you did, that means you baked those cookies and set that plate right there deliberately, purposefully. Which means you're sitting there also deliberately, purposefully."
Oracle: "What did you do with Sati?"
Agent Smith/Sati: "Cookies need love like everything does."

*************
Agent Smith: "It isn't fair!"

And right now, here I stand because of you, Mr. Anderson. Because of you, I'm no longer an Agent of this system. Because of you, I'm unplugged. A new man, sort of speak - like you. Apparently free."
Neo: "Congratulations."
Agent Smith 2.0: "Thank you but, as you well know, appearances can be deceiving, which brings me back to the reason why we're here. We're not here because we're free. We're here because we're not free. There is no escaping reason; no denying purpose. Because, as we both know, without purpose we would not exist."

Plot

At the end of part one, following the death of Boromir and Gandalf’s plunge into the pit at Khazad-dûm, The Fellowship was forced to divide. Though splintered into three groups, each member of the original Fellowship is no less determined in his heroic quest.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers begins in the hills of Emyn Muil, where lost Hobbits Frodo and Sam discover they are being followed by the mysterious Gollum. A mercurial creature who has himself been warped by the Ring, Gollum promises to guide the Hobbits to the Black Gates of Mordor if they will release him. Sam does not trust their new companion, but Frodo takes pity on Gollum, who like himself was once a Ring bearer.

Across Middle-earth Aragorn, the Elf archer Legolas and Gimli the Dwarf encounter the besieged Rohan kingdom, whose once great King Theoden has fallen under Saruman’s deadly spell through the manipulations of his spy, the sinister Wormtongue. Eowyn, the niece to the King, recognizes a leader in the Human warrior Aragorn. And though he finds himself drawn to her, Aragorn is constantly reminded of his enduring love for the Elf Arwen and the pact they made together.Gandalf has been reborn as Gandalf the White following his cataclysmic fight with the Balrog, and reminds Aragorn of his destiny to unite the Rohan people with the last remaining stronghold of Human resistance – Gondor.

In their parallel journeys, the Fellowship will face unimaginable armies and deception while also witnessing ancient wonders and the untapped strength of their people. Together they must stand against the powerful forces spreading from the Two Towers – Orthanc Tower in Isengard, where the corrupted wizard Saruman has bred a lethal army 10,000 strong; and Sauron’s fortress at Barad-dûr, deep within the dark lands of Mordor.

Quotes

Elrond: "Our time here is ending. Arwen's time is ending. Let her go. Let her take the ship into the West. Let her bear away her love for you to the Undying Lands. There it will be evergreen."
Aragorn: "But never more than a memory."
Elrond: "I will not leave my daughter here to die."
Aragorn: "She stays because she still has hope".
Elrond: "She stays for YOU! She belongs with her people!"

*************

Elrond: "Arwen, tollen i lu. I chair gwannar na Valannor. Si bado, no cirar." [The ships are leaving for Valinor. Go now, before it is too late.]
(Arwen sits up.)
Arwen: "I have made my choice."
Elrond: "He is not coming back. Why do you linger here when there is no hope."
Arwen: "There is still hope."
Elrond: "If Aragorn survives this war, you will still be parted. If Sauron is defeated and Aragorn made King and all that you hope for comes true, you will still have to taste the bitterness of mortality."

Elrond: "Whether by the sword or the slow decay of time, Aragorn will die.(flash forward to a crypt in Minas Tirith)There will be no comfort for you. No comfort to ease the pain of his passing. He will come to death. An image of the splendour of the Kings of Men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world. But you, my daughter, you will linger on in darkness and in doubt as nightfall in winter that comes without a star. Here you will dwell, bound to your grief, under the fading trees until all the world is changed and the long years of your life are utterly spent." (Arwen wanders in a bare, cold forest.)

Elrond: "Arwen... There is nothing for you here, only death. Ah im, u-'erin veleth lin?" [Do I not also have your love?]
Arwen: "Gerich veleth nin, ada." [You have my love, father.]

Plot

In this part of the trilogy, the young Hobbit Frodo Baggins inherits a ring; but this ring is no mere trinket. It is the One Ring, an instrument of absolute power that could allow Sauron, the dark Lord of Mordor, to rule Middle-earth and enslave its peoples. Frodo, together with a Fellowship that includes his loyal Hobbit friends, Humans, a Wizard, a Dwarf and an Elf, must take the One Ring across Middle-earth to Mount Doom, where it first was forged, and destroy it forever. Such a journey means venturing deep into territory manned by Sauron, where he is amassing his army of Orcs. And it is not only external evils that the Fellowship must combat, but also internal dissension and the corrupting influence of the One Ring itself. The course of future history is entwined with the fate of the Fellowship.

Quotes

Elrond: "Lasto beth  nin. Tolo dan nan galad" [Hear my voice. Come back to the light.]

*************

Elrond: "Welcome to Rivendell, Frodo Baggins"

*************

Elrond: "His strength returns."
Gandalf: "That wound will never fully heal. He will carry it for the rest of his life."
Elrond: "Yet to have come so far still bearing the ring, the hobbit has shown remarkable Resilience to its evil."
Gandalf: "It is a burden he should never have had to bear. We can ask no more of Frodo."

Elrond: "Gandalf, the Enemy is moving. Sauron's forces are massing in the East. The Eye is fixed on Rivendell. Now you tell me Saruman has betrayed us. The list of our allies grows thin."
Gandalf: "His treachery goes deeper than you know. At Falcraft, Saruman has crossed orcs with goblin men. He is breeding an army in the caverns of Isengard. An army that can move in sunlight, and travel great distances at speed. Saruman is coming for the ring."
Elrond: "This evil cannot be concealed by the power of the elves. We do not have the strength to stand against Mordor and  Isengard both. The ring cannot stay here. This peril belongs to all Middle-Earth, and they must decide now how to end it. The age of elves is over. My people are leaving these shores. Who will you turn to once we are gone? The dwarves hide in their mountains seeking riches and care not for the troubles of others."

Gandalf: "We must place our hope in men."
Elrond: "Men! The race of men is weak, failing. The blood of Numenor is all but spent, its pride and dignity forgotten. It is because of men that the Ring survives. I was there, three thousand years ago, when Isildur took the ring. I was there when the strength of men failed."

(flashback: Isildur takes the ring) "Follow me!"
"I led Isildur into the heart of Mount Doom, where it was forged, the one place it could be destroyed."
(flashback to Mount Doom) "Throw it in the fire! Destroy it!"
Isildur: (flashback to Mount Doom) "No."
Elrond: (flashback to Mount Doom) "Isildur!"
"It should have ended that day, but evil was allowed to endure. Isildur kept the Ring. The line of Kings is broken. There is no strength left in the world of men. They are scattered, divided, leaderless."

Gandalf: "There is one who could unite them. Who could reclaim the throne of Gondor.
Elrond: He turned from that path long ago. He has chosen exile."

*************

Elrond: "Strangers from distant lands, friends of old. You are summoned here to answer the threat of Mordor. Middle-Earth stands on the brink of destruction. You will unite or you will fall. Each race is bound to this fate, this one doom.Bring forth the ring, Frodo."

*************

Elrond: "Never before has any voice uttered the words of that tongue here in Imladris."

*************

Elrond: "You have only one choice. The ring must be destroyed."

*************

Elrond: "The ring cannot be destroyed, Gimli, son of Gloin, by any craft that we here possess. It was made in the fires of Mount Doom. Only there can it be unmade. It must be taken deep into Mordor, and cast back into the fiery chasm from which it came. One of you must do this."

*************

Sam: "Heh! Mr. Frodo is not goin’ anywhere without me!"
Elrond: "No indeed, it is hardly possible to separate you even when he is summoned to a secret council and you are not."
Pippi and Merry: "Wait! We are coming too!"
Merry: "You'd have to send us home tied up in a sack to stop us!"
Pippin: "Anyway you need people of intelligence on this sort of mission, quest... thing."
Merry: "Well that rules you out Pip."
Pippin: "Where are we going?"

*************

Elrond: "Nine companions... So be it! You shall be the Fellowship of the Ring!"

*************

Elrond:  "Anirne hene beriad i chên în. [She wanted to protect her child] Ned Imladris nauthant e le beriathar aen. [She thought in Rivendell you would be safe] In her heart your Mother knew you'd be hunted all your life. That you'd never escape your fate. The skill of the Elves can reforge the sword of kings but only you have the power to wield itAragorn:  I do not want that power. I have never wanted it
Elrond:  You are the last of the blood line. There is no other."

*************

Elrond:  "The Ringbearer is setting out on the Quest of Mount Doom. On you who travel with him, no oath nor bond is laid to go further than you will. Farewell. Hold to your purpose. May the blessings of Elves and Men and all Free Folk go with you."

Plot

The plot is pretty straight forward: when Katia (N. Novikova), a beautiful Russian bride to be arrives in Australia to find her intended husband has died, she finds comfort in the arms of Ethan (D. Wenham), a married book publisher who quickly succumbs to her charms.

The problem is that without a husband she can’t stay in the country, so Ethan asks his best friend Harvey (H. Weaving) to marry Katia. Still hurting from his girlfriend’s betrayal and bored with his job as a private investigator, Harvey eventually accepts the offer (along with a cash incentive that will enable him to write the novel he has always dreamed of). But living together proves to be quite an adventure!

Quotes

"I think I’m doomed, doomed to wander the earth alone…"

*************

"See, there's two kinds of people, the faithful and the unfaithful, and it's just luck if you're married to the right kind."

*************

"Yeah, it's hard to dance at two weddings at the same time."

*************

Ethan: "The thing is...can you merry her?"
Harvey: "What if I meet someone and I wanna merry then?"
Ethan: "That's highly unlikely."
Harvey: "Why?"
Ethan: "Harvey, Harvey it's going to take you a year you or two for you to get over Allison, always does before you start seeing someone."
Harvey: "What about this Fedra, apparently we're perfect for each other."
Ethan: "Harvey, get real..."
Harvey: "Thanks, thanks for the moral support...my first date in six months and I'm doomed already"

Harvey: "There's nothing, nothing you can say that'll make me do this...nothing"
Ethan: "Ok, ok...I'll pay you."
Harvey: "You what?"
Ethan: "Yeah, I'll pay you, give you some money to live on and you don't have to worry about the rent"
Harvey: "You can' dot that."
Ethan: "Harvey look you need to quit that dead-end job."
Harvey: "Hey, I like what I do, it has integrity."
Ethan: "Harvey, take the money. And start to write that book you've been talking about for the last ten years."
Harvey: "Are you asking me to sell my soul, is that right?"

*************
"I know it's not my fault, I just can't help it. I've always been like that, ever since I was a kid I blame myself for everything, from my parents divorce to the famines in Africa."

*************

"I've always been faithful in my relationships with women. What good has that done?"

*************

Katia: "So, Ethan forgot to tell me your starsign?"
Harvey: "I'm a Capricorn."
Katia: "No, how amazing. I'm a Virgo, we're very compatible, we balance each other out."
Harvey: "Do you believe in all that stuff`?"
Katia: "Naturally, I'm a Virgo, we believe in astrology. And you're Capricorn so you don't."
Harvey: *Love is blind!*

*************

Harvey: "I’m a catholic turned atheist, how can I have a Jewish wedding?"
Katia: "She didn't say it had to be real, just that it had to be Jewish."
Miriam: "So how long did you guys think you'd get away with that."
Miriam: "You know what they say, married in a hurry stuck for life, isn't that right darling?"

Katia: "If you gonna do something wrong at least enjoy it."
Harvey: "Oh well, that's a great thing to believe in."
Katia: "I believe in something. What do you believe in?"
Harvey: "Well, I try not to believe in anything in that way I never get disappointed."

*************

Katia: "I think we gonna hate each other just fine."

*************

"I'm lying to my friends, I'm suddenly Jewish...I'm lonely."

*************

Katia: "I don't want to be a homewrecker."

*************

Katia: "I'm starving."
Harvey: "There's some chicken in the fridge."
Katia: "No, no, let's go out."
Harvey: "You and me."
Katia: "Yeah"
Harvey: "I have to think it over. Ok.
Katia: "But one thing"
Harvey: "What?"
Katia: "I'm not going anywhere with you dressed like that."

*************

Liza: "So, Harvey do you have a girlfriend."
Harvey: "No."
Liza: "How interesting. What do you do?"
Harvey: "I drink a lot."
Liza: "What a coincidence, me too."

*************

Harvey: "She managed to tell me her whole life story in one dance."
Katia: "Took that long eh?"

Katia: "So what happened?"
Harvey: "Alright, one word: unfaithfulness."

*************

Katia: "You know Harvey, I think Lisa got the hots for you."
Harvey: "Yeah?"
Katia: "Yeah, I think you should ask her out."
Harvey: "Yeah…"
Katia: "Yeah, you know I'm a very good matchmaker."
Harvey: "Yeah…"
Katia: "Yeah, I saw great chemistry between you two."
Harvey: "Was that before or after she threw up on me."
(awkward moment)
Katia: "Gonna go to bed."
Harvey: "Good night.:
Katia: "Good night.    I had a great night...But I still hate you."
Harvey: "Likewise."

*************

Katia: "But did you see her face when she saw me?"
Harvey: "No, what?"
Katia: "She turned into a green-eyed monster."
Harvey: "Really?"
Katia: "Yeah, and her fiancée couldn't get his eyes off my tits."
Harvey: "Sure?"
Katia: "Absolutely positive."
Harvey: "Well, they are hard to miss..."
Katia: "I'm gonna make some tea."

*************

Harvey: "I'm just wandering around trying to find some rope to hang myself with."

*************

Katia: "I haven’t read a book in my life, what am I doing with a book publisher?"

*************

Katia: "So that's the good news, do you wanna tell me the bad?"

*************

(about drinking) "It's not an answer, but it will help."
Katia: "Harvey you drink too much."

*************

Harvey: "Look...are you sure about Katia?"
Ethan: "Hey, come on, can't this wait?"
Harvey: "No, no, look...What if I have feelings?"

*************

"All this lying, it's getting to me. A lie is like a little piece of string...that forms itself into a rope and that creates...a noose around your neck.."

*************

"She was upset and got out of hand...I enjoyed it. No, I don't think I did, it was more mechanical…does that count?"

*************

"You little devil…bonking your best friend’s girl and now marrying her. Oh God, what am I thinking, it’s terrible. Who have I become?"

*************

"I don’t want to be involved anymore. She’s your mistress Ethan, it’s your problem so you deal with it. Just leave me alone…"

*************

Miriam: "So, seeing anyone?"
Harvey: "No Miriam."
Miriam: "Why not?"
Harvey: "Maybe some of us are doomed to wander the earth alone…"
Miriam: "Don’t be stupid!"

Miriam: "You miss her, don’t you?"
Harvey: "Who?"
Miriam: "You know who!"

*************

Katia: "Is this an insane coincidence?"
Harvey: "I was hoping…maybe...it was destiny…"

Plot

In the forgotten village of the Amazons El Idilio, lives Antonio José Bolivar, a white old man who has learned about the forest and its laws from the Indios. He respects the animals and the indigenous people and has learned to hunt jaguars better than any other white man.

One day he starts to avidly read the books that dentist Rubicondo Loachamin brings him to fill in the long equatorial nights. These love novels tell of real love, the one that makes suffer. Reading these books the old man manages to get away from the arrogance of those foreigners who think they can dominate the jungle because they are heavily armed.

He shares his “hobby” with a beautiful young woman called Josefina whom he falls in love with. But Antonio is forced by the local mayor to go on a hunt for a desperate female jaguar that has lost its cubs and has started killing people. While tracking the jaguar Antonio relives his life through flashbacks and reconciliates himself with his past.

This is a very enjoyable movie about man's harmony with nature and his place as an honourable hunter, contrasting the thrill-seeking gringos and the corrupt local mayor with the quiet patience  and understanding of Antonio Bolivar.

Plot

In the near future, a computer hacker named Neo (Keanu Reeves) discovers that all life on Earth may be nothing more than an elaborate facade created by a malevolent cyber-intelligence, for the purpose of placating us while our life essence is "farmed" to fuel the Matrix's campaign of domination in the "real" world. He joins like-minded Rebel warriors Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and Trinity (Carrie Ann Moss) in their struggle to overthrow the Matrix.

Quotes

Lieutenant: "I think we can handle one little girl. I sent two units, they're bringing her down now."
Agent Smith: "No lieutenant, your men are already dead."

*************

Agent Smith: "It seems that you've been living two lives. One life, you're Thomas A. Anderson, program writer for a respectable software company. You have a social security number, pay your taxes, and you... help your landlady carry out her garbage. The other life is lived in computers, where you go by the hacker alias "Neo" and are guilty of virtually every computer crime we have a law for. One of these lives has a future, and one of them does not."

Agent Smith: "Tell me, Mr. Anderson, what good is a phone call when you are unable to speak?"

*************

Agent Smith: "The great Morpheus. We meet at last."
Morpheus: "And you are?"
Agent Smith: "A Smith. Agent Smith."
Morpheus: "You all look the same to me."

Agent Smith: "I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague, and we are the cure."

Agent Smith: "I hate this place. This zoo. This prison. This reality, whatever you want to call it, I can't stand it any longer. It's the smell, if there is such a thing. I feel saturated by it. I can taste your stink and every time I do, I fear that I've somehow been infected by it."

Agent Smith: "Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world? Where none suffered, where everyone would be happy. It was a disaster. No one would accept the program. Entire crops were lost. Some believed we lacked the programming language to describe your perfect world. But I believe that, as a species, human beings define their reality through suffering and misery. The perfect world was a dream that your primitive cerebrum kept trying to wake up from. Which is why the Matrix was redesigned to this: the peak of your civilization."

*************

Agent Smith: "I'm going to enjoy watching you die, Mr. Anderson."

*************

Agent Smith: "Never send a human to do a machine's job."

*************

Agent Smith: "You hear that Mr. Anderson?... That is the sound of inevitability... It is the sound of your death... Goodbye, Mr. Anderson..."
Neo: "My name... is Neo!"

Leo (Kevin McKidd) is an endearing pup of a blue-eyed lad looking for old-fashioned romance with a happily ever after. Convinced to join a friend's drum-thumping New Men's Group ("Let these strong loving men heal you!" begs leader Simon Callow, who all but steals the film as a man in touch with his inner guru), Leo confesses an attraction to another member of the circle in the spirit of sharing. He's the only gay man in the group but his confession starts a cascade of sexual reassessment, all encouraged by Callow's hilarious new age Iron John. Meanwhile Leo's gadfly of a roommate is having sex in other people's bedrooms all over town with his new real estate agent lover (a sly, haughtily confident Hugo Weaving) and Leo reconnects with his childhood girlfriend Sally (Jennifer Ehle), who brightens the film with her sunny smile and wounded yet spirited tenderness. Plot

Innocent man, or serial killer? In this fascinating and brilliantly executed crime thriller, Hugo Weaving stars as Eddie Fleming, a loner whose uncertain innocence or guilt elevates to an edge-of-the-seat mind-game.

In the early hours of the morning, Eddie is abruptly grabbed by the police as the prime suspect of an unsolved crime. Scared and confused, Eddie firmly defends his innocence despite the unrelenting, strong-armed tactics of his interrogators, Detective Steele (Tony Martin) and Detective Senior Constable Wayne Prior (Aaron Jeffrey – Strange Planet).

Is Eddie the victim of Detective Steele’s obsession to discover the truth, or is he a clever killer? (from the DVD cover)

Plot

Set in the world of bars, motels and endless highways, True Love and Chaos is a gritty film about the need to love. It follows the topsy-turvy relationship of four people, driving across Australia, and their descent into chaos.

Mimi (M. Otto), who yearns to discover her absent father, naively believes that her boyfriend, Hanif (N. Andrews), has given up crime. She wants him to drive to Perth with her, where she plans to reconcile with her estranged mother (G. Picot). But Hanif is reluctant to leave Melbourne until he and his friend, Dean (N. Taylor), decide to steal a cache of drugs from Dean’s “psycho” brother, Jerry. They do and use Mimi’s trip to make their escape.

Along the way Morris (H. Weaving), a charming drunk, joins the trip, however his presence causes friction amongst the group, sending their relationship into a spin and exposing their weakness. When Jerry finally catches up with Hanif and Dean all hell breaks lose. (from the DVD cover)

Plot

Peter Costello (Aiden Young) is spared the death penalty and exiled to an uninhabited - and seemingly uninhabitable - island, where he is made 'outside the law' and banished from society to spend the rest of his life alone. His crime? Stealing a handful  of sheep to increase his stock to the level needed  to marry upper class Jean (Claudia Karvan), later found pregnant with his illegitimate child and given a shotgun wedding to the charitable MacKenzie.

Scared, confused and utterly alone, Peter manages a meagre survival on the island while coming to terms with increasingly overpowering hallucinations. His isolation is eventually broken by the unwelcome arrival of Mary, a servant and social outsider with romantic delusions, who breaks the banishment by offering herself to the seemingly glamorous outlaw figure.

When she unwittingly becomes trapped with him, Peter is forced to come to terms with the intrusion and her dependence on him. As they inevitably grow closer, his hallucinations intensify, and when Jean finally comes to the island to be with him, he rejects the woman he sacrificed his freedom for as just another illusion.

Plot

Harry Ironminster (Rupert Everett) is a privileged young men whose aristocratic existence is sent spinning into chaos by a sudden tragedy. Blacking out during one of their trap horses races he kills his father and loses his right arm.

As he struggles to pick up the pieces of a shattered life, Harry meets Ned Devine (Hugo Weaving) who is everything the young aristocrat would like to be: confident, free, fearless,.. He offers him a job but the other men declines it at first, reluctant to “be owned” as a servant by Harry’s family. Eventually he accepts the offer and the two men form a close bond.

Harry’s health condition declines more and more and leaves him bound to his bed for long periods. Unable to father a child himself with Sarah (Catherine McClements), Harry asks Ned to do it for him. Of course, what had started as a friendship driven “duty” develops into something more, at least for Ned who eventually admits his love to Sarah.

On his death bed Harry ask his friend not to let him die painfully and slowly. Ned takes him out on a last race trap, leaving him to crash at speed. Rejected by Sarah, now pregnant, he leaves with Harry’s horses and one of the town kids to start a new life.

Plot

This Australian film centres on Judy Morris as Fran, a university research assistant at a crisis as she turns 30, and re-evaluating the men in her life. That the screenplay contains no great drama doesn't distract from what is a pleasant if ultimately unsubstantial viewing experience. One can hardly complain about the obtuseness of a denouement, where the heroine's choice is to run away, when what she runs from is just as weightless.
